Outfit Inspiration: Classy Ways to Wear Crop Tops

The esteemed crop top: a trend that just won’t go away. Instead of banishing midriff-baring tops back to the ‘90s along with choker necklaces and windbreaker jackets, designers continue to embrace the look, reinventing it with each passing fashion season. If the Chanel fall 2014 runway featured a crop top, then you know it’s still a hot ticket item.

I’ve never worn a crop top until this past summer. Why? The look doesn’t always necessarily read as classy. I’m not a teenager rocking out at Coachella, after all. Fortunately, there are so many elegant and “grown up” ways to flaunt the crop top. The key is proportion.

3 Classy Ways to Wear Crop Tops

1. Matching Sets. For an extremely chic way to wear crop tops, invest in a matching set. These sets include a bottom and a cropped top in the same print, which creates the illusion of a more uniform appearance. An outfit like this shows off a slice of skin, but still looks pulled-together and polished. Find a matching full-length midi skirt and crop top in a luxurious fabric for a look that’s fit for a formal occasion.

2. High-Waist Pants. Because crop tops expose some skin on the upper-half of your body, it’s best to balance out the look and pair the trendy item with a more modest bottom. Pants with high waists perfectly complement skimpier tops. Pair your crop with a wide leg dress pant or some high-rise jeans.

3. Midi Skirts. Perhaps the most feminine and sophisticated way to wear crop tops is to pair them with midi skirts. A skirt with a long hemline paired with a short top make the perfect couple. The silhouette is sweet, and the proportion is well-balanced. For my birthday in Newport earlier this month, I paired a white crop top with a bright red midi skirt. Here’s my look:
