Though most fashion weeks across the globe have come to an end, Boston is still celebrating. This weekend, the Institute of Contemporary Art hosted a fashion event which included a sneak peek into Boston Globe Style Magazine’s fall 2014 feature. Their forecast for the season’s coolest trends highlighted fashions that are “decidedly edgy, tough, and grown-up” for the strong woman on the go. My favorite look? An impeccably tailored white suit. Whoever said you can’t wear white after Labor Day is sadly mistaken. You can check out the feature titled “Fall Fashion’s Cooling Trend” in the issue now!
Outfit Inspiration: Rethinking Black
So what did I wear to the glam event? Black is the obvious choice for a nighttime affair. But if you’re bored of the basic black outfit, skip the head-to-toe look and break it up with something unexpected. I paired a black, long-sleeved crop top with a navy blue midi skirt. I wore a similar look for my birthday earlier this September, but this outfit’s color palette is more appropriate for the cooler months ahead. Black and blue aren’t your typical combination, but I think the two hues work well together. Navy softens up a dark ensemble and adds some visual interest into the mix. Plus, it’s equally as elegant as black. I kept my accessories simple to really let the blue come through.
Another way to spice up a black outfit for a night out on the town is to flaunt a statement piece. Take a cue from my friend and stylish fashion blogger Joelle, and pair black with a striking print. I just love how these striped slacks pop against the rest of her dark outfit. Check out her faith and fashion site My Sunday Dress for more inspiration.
The next time you’re headed out for an event, rethink black and add a unique detail to your look!
