Hypothetically, if an airline were to lose my luggage, leaving me helplessly stranded with only one spare outfit (packed in my carry-on, naturally) to wear every day during a week-long vacation, I would pray for a shirt dress. Why? It’s an extremely versatile piece of clothing.
During my recent trip to Europe, I packed not one, but three shirt dresses–and thankfully my suitcase was not misplaced en route to my destination. Dressed down with loafers or sneakers, a shirt dress works as a sweet daytime look and a makes for a charming alternative to shorts and a top. Dressed up with jewelry and heels, the dress easily transitions into night-on-the-town attire. The perfect merge of style and function, a shirt dress is not only my idea of an agreeable travel companion, but also ranks high on my list of wardrobe must-haves.
Speaking of easy transitions, the shirt dress is wearable throughout most of the year. Keep the look minimal in the spring and summer or add layers to a long-sleeved shirt dress to flaunt it in the fall.
On a night out in Krakow (and on almost every other day of my trip for that matter), I wore this Target (yes, Target!) shirt dress with a studded clutch and heels. Whether walking around town, seeing the sights, or sipping late-night cocktails, the shirt dress proved appropriate for any event–now that’s multi-tasking at its best.
If versatility isn’t reason enough to love a good shirt dress, then consider this: it’s a classic. Google iconic screen sirens like Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, or any of the fictional ladies from Mad Men, and you’ll likely find an image of a perfectly poised lady strutting around a glamorous seaside town while showing off impeccably coiffed hair and, of course, a shirt dress. Feminine dresses and menswear-inspired pieces are timeless. Therefore, a combination of the two will never go out of style. It’s science.
